MLO License Prep Mortgage Loan Originator Licensing Run the worth-it math

Original data study

How many hours of education does an MLO license actually require?

How this was collected

Every row below is a training requirement the SAFE Act sets in federal statute, read directly from the United States Code (12 U.S.C. 5104 and 5105) rather than from a course provider's summary. One row per stated requirement: the total pre-licensure education minimum, each topic minimum inside it, the elective remainder, and the annual continuing education minimum. A requirement is included only once it has been checked against the statute and dated. The headline figures are computed at build time across the rows measured in hours; the minimum passing score is a percentage, so it appears in the table but is left out of that math.

What the data shows

Requirements analyzed

6

Smallest

2 hours

Median

5.5 hours

Largest

20 hours

Average

8 hours

Largest and smallest by some distance: Pre-licensure education (PE), total required hours (20 hours), PE hours: non-traditional mortgage lending (2 hours), PE hours: electives / undefined instruction (12 hours).

Excluded from the figures above because hours is not its unit: SAFE MLO National Test, minimum passing score (75 percent). It is still shown in the table below with its source.

Limitations

  • These are federal floors, not your total. A state may require additional state-specific pre-licensure or continuing education hours on top of the federal minimum, so your real number can be higher than the largest figure here.
  • The topic rows are components of the 20-hour total, not additional hours on top of it. That means the average here is the average size of a stated requirement, not a number of hours you can add up.
  • Dollar figures are deliberately absent from this study. The fees administered by the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS), the test fee, the annual processing fee, the credit report fee, and the criminal background check fee, are set by NMLS rather than by statute and could not be confirmed against a primary source, so this site hosts no number for them. Per-state application fees and surety bonds are excluded for the same reason. See what it costs to get licensed, where each of those items links to its official source for the current amount, and the state pages for per-state links.
  • Operational test specifications such as the question count and the time limit are also not published here: they are set by NMLS, not by statute, and we could not confirm them against a primary source. The official testing handbook is the place to read them.
  • This is a study of what the rules require, not of what candidates actually study. It says nothing about how many hours of preparation it takes to pass.
